How early can I see an orthodontist?

Many parents have questions about the suitability of orthodontic treatment for their children.  We agree with the Australian Society of Orthodontists and recommend each child have an assessment with a registered specialist orthodontist between the ages of 8-10 years.

We will provide you with an informed assessment of your child’s orthodontic needs.  At times, this may mean preparing you and your child for orthodontic treatment at a more appropriate stage of development a few years down the track.

When certain orthodontic issues are identified early, we may recommend interceptive treatment (Phase I or early treatment) to guide the incoming permanent teeth and jaw growth in a favourable direction.  Early treatment may also make the next step of braces (Phase II) easier and less complicated.

Examples of orthodontic issues in young children:

  • Thumb-sucking past the age of 5
  • Cross-bites
  • Early loss of baby teeth
  • Adult teeth that do not come in properly
  • Crowding of front teeth

Our aim is to provide efficient and appropriate treatment for your child so they can have confidence during their school years.  A registered specialist orthodontist has the expertise to know the right treatment options at the right time for your child.  Call our friendly reception team on (03) 5831 1282 to book a consultation with our orthodontists.
